Chaos and Cranberries

"This is Boysie Lumquest, our police chief," the woman explained. "Oh, and I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Lanie Anders Hill. I'm the marketing manager here." Feather shook Lanie's hand and immediately felt a multitude of voices trying to say their piece. She resisted the opportunity to tell this woman she'd only just met that her dead relatives were talking over one another, each with an important message for Lanie. There was something so familiar about her face, but she couldn't place it. "Nice to meet you, Lanie. Can you give us an idea what's going on? We came all of this way and now we have to drive back to Charming. It seems like we're owed some kind of explanation." "I'm not sure of that myself!" Lanie answered, pivoting toward Boysie. "Murder," Boysie replied matter-of-factly. "We can't be sure what happened yet. It was the darndest thing. Poor fella was wrapped in cranberries, strung on twine. Didn't kill him of course, the blow to the head did that. And he had a gold decoration from this enormous tree in the lobby stuck in his mouth. Quite a sight."

Perilously Pink

"Did you knock four times?" An unattached body called from behind the thick, wooden door.
"Yes. Is there something else I need to do?" Feather stood in front of, or rather behind the Fold-Em and Go laundromat, waiting for the okay to enter a hidden room. She wasn't much for secret societies, or for clubs, but an ominous note left in front of her apartment made it sound like she couldn't operate a paranormal investigation agency in Charming without belonging.
The door squeaked dramatically as it opened, revealing a tall, chestnut-haired woman with impeccable makeup. She was adorned in a pink cape. Most surprising was the gem-encrusted ruby red catsuit covering her body.
"And you are?"
"Feather…Jones. I thought that was obvious." Now she was certain this was a mistake. "Maybe I should come back another time. You seem busy." She glanced beyond the woman, where something steamed in a large pot. It was just like the late-night horror movies she used to watch, where the unsuspecting guest of honor was thrown into the stew at the end.
